People always say its best to do it on a mattress or trampoline first. It does help but only A little bit. I know someone who practice on a matters and stuff and she was amazing. Then she tried it on the ground and barely got her legs up at all.
At first my jumps for literally horrible! I could not get one inch off of the ground. So I practiced at least 3 times a week. And I'm getting better, my cheer tryouts are about 5 months away but I can't tumble. I have NO tumbling skills!!!! any tips on tumbling?????:-)
My advice for getting your jump higher is first, stretching really good. Then jumping on your trampoline while trying to get your jumps as high as possible. Take a rest a little bit. and then try them on the ground. Video yourself about once a week to see how much she's improved. This has helped me and I just wanted to share my tips =)
Jumping on a trampoline actually makes your jumps worse because you get used to the bounce and your jumps with get lower because it's harder on the ground

never ever lean forward during a jump, thats probably why your leg is hurting, that and leaning forward won't help your legs get higher at all
Leaning forward is probably the worst tip you can give a cheerleader for improving jumps
